The Bottom Line: What Will My B-Model Cost?
Sonex is a basic and economical, easy to build, all metal two place monoplane. Designed to meet the needs of the European and Domestic sport aircraft markets, it can incorporate various light weight contemporary engines of 80 to 130 hp (engine package weight of less than 200 lbs.), and is perfectly suited to the US Sport Pilot/LSA regulations. Outstanding performance is achieved through its clean aerodynamic shape and simple, light weight construction. The Sonex leverages horsepower in small, lightweight aircraft engines very efficiently, offering The Best Performance Per Dollar, and boasts an incredibly robust airframe with ample structural safety margin allowing aerobatics into the IAC competetion levels.
In the current B-Model configuration, the Sonex has matured to offer more creature comforts, a wider variety of engine choices, more capability and greater ease of build.
What is the B-Model? It’s what you’ve been asking for! More of everything you want in a sport aircraft:
|Sonex, Waiex and Xenos B-Models are enlarged via straightening of the forward fuselage sides, and feature improved creature comforts:
|The enlarged B-Model instrument panel offers plenty of space for today’s popular dual-screen avionics installations (MGL iEFIS Explorer 8.5” displays shown here) with room to spare.|
|The new B-Model fuel tank holds 20 US gallons – a 4-gallon increase over the original Sonex, Waiex and Xenos with a range increase of over 130 miles!|
|A new Universal Cowl is designed to fit many popular engine options. Builders can experience the same great firewall-forward support for AeroVee/AeroVee Turbo and Jabiru engines, and in addition, B-Model engine mounts are available for UL Power UL260 and 350 series, and Rotax 912 series engines. |Sonex and Waiex B-Model kits come with more of what you need to finish your aircraft in the shortest time possible, with higher-quality results:
|The best part of a Sonex Aircraft is the way it flies, and the B-Model generation of aircraft is no-exception!
B-Models have completely replaced the original Sonex, Waiex & Xenos in the Sonex Aircraft product lineup.

All Sonex and Waiex kits come with the option to build either the original "standard length" ailerons, or longer Sport Acro ailerons. Sport Acro ailerons will increase your Sonex or Waiex roll rate from approx. 80 degrees per second to approx. 120 degrees per second at 125 mph. There is no need to designate either aileron option when placing your kit order, all kits come with aileron skin and flap skin stock long-enough to build either option, and all the extra flap and aileron ribs required for either option.
To accommodate the longer ailerons, the aircraft flaps are shortened by one flap rib bay. The effect on Vso stall speed is barley perceptible, however, adding only about 2 mph to the aircraft's stall speed with flaps extended.
Although the Sport Acro ailerons are longer, the aircraft's control harmony does not change and the aircraft does not become difficult to handle. The stick forces required to roll the aircraft at a given rate do not change until exceeding 80 degrees per second -- it just takes a little more stick force to get full deflection of the aileron in the range of 80-120 degrees per second.
