Insurance for your Sonex Aircraft!
There are several options available to insure your homebuilt aircraft project, including private insurance brokers. The following companies represent some of the more popular and attractive insurance options for the Sonex fleet of aircraft.
Falcon Insurance Agency has been selected to administer the EAA Insurance Solutions program, which is by-far the most popular insurance program for Sonex Aircraft customers. In Canada, EAA Insurance Solutions offers services through Nacora Brokers, Ltd.
In addition to insurance for your flying aircraft, Sonex Aircraft recommends Project Insurance through EAA Insurance Solutions, as most homeowners policies do not cover your aircraft project under-construction, including liability considerations in your shop.

First Flight Insurance Group established their USUA insurance program in 2002 for ultralight and light aircraft including those complying with the European Microlight regulations (prior to the establishment of Sport Pilot in the United States). Sonex Aircraft were also designed to European Microlight standards before Sport Pilot came into existence, making the USUA insurance program from First Flight Insurance Group a great option for Sonex Aircraft customers.
Eligible aircraft must not exceed a max takeoff weight of 1,320 lbs (1,430 lbs for amphibious aircraft) and stall speed of 45 mph in landing configuration. This qualifies all Sonex piston aircraft models for coverage with First Flight Insurance Group.
The USUA insurance program offers 3rd party liability insurance only. There is no hull insurance available and no passengers are covered, but this is a great opportunity for Sonex pilots to get insurance for their Phase I flight test period until they have enough flight time to qualify for coverage through other insurance companies to cover passengers and purchase hull insurance, if desired. Some Onex single-place aircraft pilots may wish to stay with First Flight Insurance Group permanently if hull insurance is not a concern.
First Flight Insurance Group is very flexible, and loves working with pilots. They require 5 hours in-type, but that flight experience does not have to be flown with a CFI, so flying with another Sonex owner would suffice, and time in a similar handling aircraft is also acceptable.
First Flight Insurance Group offers an affordable fixed annual premium. There is no charge for a second pilot on the policy, and no charge for adding additional insured landowners. USUA membership is required, which is only $40 per year: www.usua.org
Sonex builders interested in First Flight Insurance Group are invited to contact USUA Program Manager Dawne Witmer for more information.
