June Sonex Builder Workshop a Great Weekend!
06-06-13

Workshop attendee Tony Sabos (foreground) experiences T-Flight Basic Aircraft Familiarization instruction with Sonex Chief Flight Instructor Joe Norris.

Sonex Aircraft held it's Summer, 2013 Sonex Builder's Workshop on June 1-2nd, the 54th Sonex Workshop event! The weekend attracted another fantastic group of current and prospective Sonex Aircraft builders, as attendees from across the country and around the globe traveled to Oshkosh to learn more about building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft. The group constructed sample Sonex metalworking projects, received detailed informational sessions about all Sonex Aircraft designs, engine options, AeroConversions products, and all other aspects of Sonex Aircraft ownership.

Some great flying weather afforded an opportunity on Saturday and Sunday for several fly-by's of Sonex factory prototypes. This was also the first Workshop since the establishment of the Sonex T-Flight Transition Training Program, and several attendees had an opportunity to experience the Basic Aircraft Familiarization training package while in Oshkosh. Workshop attendees also had the chance to inspect every inch of Sonex factory prototype aircraft, and try them on for size.

The Sonex Aircraft Workshop continues to be an extremely valuable experience for our builders, saving them time, money and answering many frequently asked questions in the building process. Sonex Builder Workshops are held several times per year at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities in Oshkosh, WI, and significant kit discount incentives are offered for attendees. Our next Sonex Workshop will be held October 5-6, 2013. Sign-up Today!

Workshop attendees get to work on their metalworking projects! The Sonex Workshop project uses the Sonex Aircraft plans system and incorporates all major types of metalwork used in the construction of Sonex kits.

Jeremy instructs attendees in solid riveting techniques for the main wing spars of Sonex Aircraft.

Attendees get a tour of the Sonex warehouse, and an opportunity to inspect kit and engine parts.

The fourth annual North Carolina Spring Fly-In was held on the 11th of May, 2013 at Siler City Municipal Airport in Siler City, NC by the American Sonex Association. Sonex First Flight: Andrew Pearce
05-28-13

Congratulations to Andrew Pearce of Raleigh, North Carolina whose standard gear, Jabiru 3300 powered Sonex (S/N 618) flew for the first time on May 22nd! Originally from Australia, Andrew, his wife Rosemary, and their children have become a special part of the Sonex family, as both Andrew and Rosemary have provided valuable electrical engineering talent to our E-Flight electric aircraft research & development project. "On Wednesday the 22nd of May, Sonex #618 'Flyin' Matilda' left the ground and embraced the sky," writes Andrew. "She is powered by a Jabiru 3300 and sports a tailwheel. She flew wonderfully and even apparently landed herself while I was still wondering what had happened. Team Pearce-Ros (Me, Rosemary, Michael and Matthew) wants to thank the academy, our technical counselor Randy Smith, our hangar mate Mark Cassada whose name I probably just spelled wrong, the manager and overlord of the Oxford Henderson airport, Mike Kellogg (who just told me on the phone that he had sold my aircraft for scrap) and of course the entire Sonex extended family. Thanks to Tony Spicer for giving us a flight in Sonex 32, all those years ago. It is your fault Rosemary’s laundry sink is full of paint." Gold Wings are on the way to Andrew!

Sonex Flying Stories:
AeroVee to the Extreme with Gary Motley
05-15-13

With so many Sonex-related videos available on YouTube, we can't possibly keep-up with it all on this web site. We do our best to post videos that are inspiring to other Sonex Aircraft builders, or that show-off the capabilities of our products particuarly well.

This new video from Gary Motley, "Sonex Aerobatics; lots of spins and flight atop the Colorado Continental Divide," certainly checks-off both criteria, showing his AeroVee powered Sonex through several aerobatic manuevers and in cruise flight at 14,000 ft over the Rockies. "Perhaps some of these videos of an Aerovee powered Sonex at extremes of the flying envelope might help," wrote Gary, to which we say "Keep 'em coming!"

Spring Sonex Flying with Craig Ritson
05-14-13

Sonex builder Craig Ritson has been experimenting with external GoPro video camera mounts and some fun flying with his Jabiru 2200 powered Sonex# 540, with some great results. Craig's story is inspiring, in that he was able to construct his Sonex despite serious permanent injuries to his arm and hand. Check-out the fruits of his labor in his most-recent video, "Sonex Spring Flight," which is a beautiful combination of fun flying, great evening light, and an inspirational sound track. Sonex Offers T-Flight Transition Training Program!
05-06-13

(Online Registration)

Download PDF Registration Form

Sonex Aircraft, LLC is proud to announce the new T-Flight Transition Training Program, offering type-specific transition flight training for the Sonex line of aircraft. Sonex has recently been issued an FAA Letter of Deviation Authority (LODA) authorizing Sonex Aircraft, LLC to provide training for pilots building, buying or considering a Sonex design. The FAA, NTSB, Aircraft Kit Industry Association (AKIA), EAA and others have identified transition training as a key component to improving safety in the Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft fleet, and transition training in the form of dual instruction given by a CFI is an increasingly common requirement to obtain insurance for homebuilt aircraft.

"We are extremely excited to be offering this service to the Sonex pilot community," remarks Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett. "Increasing the safety of Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft and the worldwide Sonex fleet has always been a high priority for us here at Sonex. The timing is right to put the pieces together in creating this program, offering professional and thorough transition training with Certified Flight Instructors"

Through the Sonex T-Flight Transition Training Program, students have the opportunity to experience training at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC factory in Oshkosh, WI. Ground and flight instruction (dual instruction only) is available in the Sonex factory prototype aircraft that are most appropriate to students’ needs, given by Sonex Aircraft’s own Certified Flight Instructors. Per FAA LODA requirements, the training is for aircraft familiarization and transition purposes only. Student applicants must already hold a pilot certificate with appropriate category and class rating, as well as any required endorsements.

For full details, package pricing, and registration information, visit the Sonex T-Flight Transition Training Program home page.
