AeroVee 2.1 Engine Kit

The AeroVee 2.1 is a complete VW Conversion Engine Kit Package, by AeroConversions, a product line of Sonex Aircraft, LLC.

The AeroVee 2.1 package is a 2180 cc, 80 hp Aero-Engine that can be run on 100LL or Auto Fuel. The complete package weighs 161 lbs complete! All of the supplied components are brand-new, zero-time parts.

The AeroVee comes as a complete kit that you can assemble yourself in approximately 12 hours, with the aid of an AeroVee Assembly and Installation Manual and an instructional DVD, along with free Phone/Email Technical Support. An AeroVee engine on-line discussion group is also available. The AeroVee DVD is available for purchase separate from the engine kit for those that wish to preview the project.

The AeroVee engine kit also includes the AeroConversions AeroInjector.

The AeroVee 2.1 Engine Kit continues the Sonex Aircraft tradition of simple, elegant design.

Due to the increasing volume of AeroVee engine sales, we have been able to incorporate new features that enhance the already robust AeroVee design. The new AeroVee 2.1 features a purpose-built custom crankshaft that has a larger diameter and longer prop hub interface. This new design also eliminates the distributor drive gear and the racer spacer, making for an easier assembly. AeroVee 2.1 continues to use standard bearings, eliminating the need for custom bearings and allowing for easy replacement at overhaul time. All external steel conversion components are also now zinc plated for improved aesthetics and additional corrosion resistance.

AeroVee Turbo

The AeroVee Turbo is rated as a 100 horsepower engine at sea level, and yields significant performance enhancement to the Sonex line of aircraft without breaking the bank.

In a Sonex Aircraft, the AeroVee Turbo will yield a rate of climb up-to 1300 fpm, and a TAS at 8000' of 175 mph. Two Sensenich fixed-pitch propeller options are being offered for AeroVee Turbo installations on Sonex Aircraft. A 54" diameter x 50" pitch prop is intended for those wishing to maximize climb performance while still retaining a very-respectable 170 mph TAS cruise capability at 8,000'. A 56" diameter x 52" pitch prop will maximize top-end speeds, measured as-high as 187 mph TAS using WOT at 8,000' (38 in HG MAP) during Sonex/AeroVee Turbo flight test. Designed with simplicity in-mind, the AeroVee Turbo is intended for use with fixed pitch, or ground-adjustable propellers, keeping the package Sport Pilot Eligible by not requiring a constant-speed propeller, and with sea level cruise just under the Sport Pilot maximum speed at 135mph TAS at the Max. Continuous RPM specification for the AeroVee Turbo under 5,000’ MSL, 3200 RPM.

A note about alternative engine choices: Although there may be other viable engine choices for Sonex Aircraft, LLC airframes, only approved engine installations have been engineered and tested by Sonex Aircraft, LLC, and have proven to offer outstanding, reliable performance without compromising the flight characteristics or useful load of the airframes. When installed according to Sonex-provided documentation, the user of an approved engine can anticipate a trouble-free installation proven by thousands of flight hours, as well as full customer support and on-going serviceabilty.

Customers should not underestimate the vast amounts of time, money, and effort that go into alternative engine development and installation. Any customer choosing to use an unsupported engine installations are true "experimenters". Sonex Aircraft, LLC will not offer firewall-forward technical support for unapproved engine installations. Your choice of an alternative engine may also result in insurability problems. As a potential builder, you must educate yourself on the true impact of your engine choice before embarking on an alternative engine installation. The list of issues that should be considered include but are not limited to: Installation support (cowl, engine mount, cooling), installed weight, reliability, serviceability, impact on flight qualities and useful load of airframe, and availability/cost of insurance. Sonex Aircraft engine installations must not exceed 200 lbs total weight forward of the firewall. Any builder considering use of a heavier installation should take notice of the important information contained in our Gross Weight Advisory (LSA Compliance and Safety) Letter.

Sonex staff have been involved in the aircraft and engine business for over 40 years and we are constantly watching the engine market for emerging products. If a new, viable powerplant emerges which fits our needs and philosophy it will be offered only after it has been thoroughly tested on factory aircraft. If you have any questions about your engine choice, please feel free to contact us.
