SubSonex Microjet Makes Kitplanes and AOPA Pilot Covers; Bob Carlton Wins Bill Barber Award!
06-23-15

The SubSonex JSX-2 microjet will be hitting mailboxes this month on the covers of AOPA Pilot and Kitplanes magazines!

"SubSonex: The practical jet age arrives" is an expansive 19 page feature story in the August issue of Kitplanes magazine, written by the magazine's editor-in-chief, Paul Dye. Paul is the first non-Sonex pilot to fly the SubSonex, and his article is a very favorable flight review of the aircraft, which includes sidebar articles about the PBS TJ-100 turbojet engine, an interview with John and Jeremy Monnett, a description of SubSonex kit contents and pricing, the SubSonex transition training process and the transition training aircraft: the TsT-14 BonusJet. A video was released in May about the SubSonex and Paul Dye's experience flying the aircraft, which is available on YouTube.

"Having A Blast: A glider transition to a jet" is featured as the July 2015 cover story in AOPA Pilot magazine, written by editor Dave Hirschman. Hirschman was the second non-Sonex pilot to fly the aircraft, and he was very complimentary of the SubSonex in the magazine's "Hangar Talk" section: "Flying JSX-2 is a scream," he says. "It's intoxicating, and it's easy to imagine flying clubs and partnerships being formed around this exciting new aircraft." The 8-page feature article thoroughly reviews the SubSonex and also covers the TsT-14 BonusJet transition training process. AOPA also released a great video about the Subsonex and Dave Hirschman's experiences flying the aircraft!

Transition training is a significant milestone associated with these two articles, as Desert Aerospace's BonusJet program allowed both pilot journalists to gain their FAA LOA's (Letter Of Authorization) to fly the SubSonex via the same mechanism that SubSonex customers will use to transition into their SubSonex kits. Both Paul Dye and Dave Hirschman came-in to the program with similar sport aircraft experience, and both completed the program successfully. Watch our Webinar about SubSonex Transition Training!

Bob Carlton to Receive 2015 Bill Barber Award for Showmanship
SubSonex air show performer and chief test pilot for the SubSonex program Bob Carlton will will be presented with the 2015 Bill Barber Award for Showmanship on Tuesday evening, July 21, at EAA AirVenture’s Theater in the Woods. Carlton joins a long list of honorees that reads like an air show performers’ hall of fame. The Barber Award is sponsored by World Airshow News magazine and the friends and family of the late Bill Barber. It has been presented annually since 1986 to air show performers or teams who have demonstrated great skill and showmanship. Bob will be making several performances in the SubSonex during AirVenture 2015, including both night shows. According to Bob, the SubSonex will have carry more night airshow pyrotechnics than his reknowned Super Salto jet sailplane! Read more about the Bill Barber Award, and find the AirVenture Airshow Schedule on EAA's web site.

Forward: The Business of Moving-On
06-12-15

"Move on… That can sound like an awfully cliché, and almost callous phrase as we speak it here today. But you see, that is most definitely what Jeremy wants us to do. To move on. To continue fulfilling the dream of he and his father. The dream that we share, and most importantly, the dream shared by our customers."

Those are some of the words included in our staff's speech to a standing-room-only crowd of over 2,000 people in EAA's Eagle Hangar at Jeremy Monnett's celebration of life on Sunday. As a staff, we held hands together on-stage, we expressed how much Jeremy and Mike Clark meant to us as brothers, and we talked about the future.

Forward… what better word to describe the path that we must take? The word was penned as the Wisconsin state motto in 1848 by Governor Nelson Dewey and Milwaukee attorney (later to become Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice) Edward Ryan, at a time when the entire government of Wisconsin had yet to be organized as the newest state of the Union – a daunting task. As a proud University of Wisconsin Badger, Jeremy Monnett was well acquainted with the motto Forward, and he lived it every day. Running Sonex Aircraft, LLC without Jeremy is also a daunting task.

Here are some more excerpts from Sunday's speech, which describe our path Forward:

"Now let's not kid ourselves: there is a HUGE hole left in Jeremy's place. His talents and energy – My God, his energy! – will not be easily or fully replaced. We will have to draw from the unique talents of every member of our team to piece together a patchwork quilt to place over that hole. And like our team is holding hands in-front of you today, that patchwork quilt will be stitched together by our love for our lost brothers, and our love and respect for one another, cultivated by this most difficult of times.

To our customers, we promise to continue innovating. Before this tragedy occurred, Friday was set-aside to discuss the next project. Despite all of the events and pain of the week, inspiration took over and we had some of those discussions anyway. It was hard without Jeremy, but we did it, even to the extent of creating a rough mock-up. We felt Jeremy smiling down on us in the R&D shop as the creative juices were flowing. It felt good. That airplane will roll-out of our hangar someday soon as a fully-realized product.

Now, This is the last time you'll ever hear us speak of this aircraft until it's ready to fly, so DON’T ASK! (waving finger playfully at customers in attendance)

To the aviation community, we promise to continue our service and advocacy for aviators and homebuilders everywhere. The hard work that Jeremy has accomplished in working with aviation's alphabet soup is simply too important for us not to continue.

To the greater Oshkosh community, we will continue working for growth and prosperity in the area, especially in stewardship of this wonderful airport named for one of our company's earliest mentors and role models.

To youth who look to the sky in wonder: we will continue stoking the fire of your dreams, and we promise to take the time to mentor and encourage you in every way possible, as Jeremy did so passionately.

To John: You and Betty were just beginning to enjoy the fruits of your labor with more frequent trips to the condo in Florida, and the confidence that only comes with  having an immensely capable heir at the helm. We understand that you will be getting re-engaged and more hands-on in the wake of this tragedy – and believe me, we need you to do so! But we also want you to enjoy the good life with your bride. We promise to work exceptionally hard so that, when you are ready, you can move toward a more leisurely and relaxing lifestyle, which you so richly deserve.

Now, will we do all of this at the remarkable pace of Jeremy? No. That’s simply… impossible. Because you see, Jeremy was larger than life. But we will do it… together."

To all of our current and prospective customers around the World, we're open for business, and it's time to move Forward. Will you join us?

Obituary: Jeremy T. Monnett, 1974-2015
06-04-15

Oshkosh lost one of its finest young leaders, community contributors and all-around great guys with the passing of Jeremy Trent Monnett. A lover of family, life & community, he is survived by his wife Kate (Cotter), their two sons, Miles & Brooks, his parents, John & Betty Monnett, all of Oshkosh, his brothers John (Terri) Monnett III of LaCrosse and his twin Jason (Jaimie) Monnett of Oshkosh, Parents-In-Law Kerry and Tom Christopher of Waukesha, Mike & DeLoma Cotter of Fond du Lac, brothers in law Dan Cotter and his beloved Ruth Zimmerman, Tim Cotter and his fiancÚ Sam Green, step in-laws Courtney & Aleta Schultz and Eric and Scott (Jodi) Christopher. His nephews & niece: Calvin & Juliet Monnett of Oshkosh, John Monnett IV of LaCrosse and nephew Ryan McWane of Oshkosh. He is also survived by numerous beloved Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. He loved all of his family so much: Shirks, Monnetts, Diedrichs, Cotters, Sheahan & Christophers.

Jeremy loved being a father. His family was his life. He and Kate lived and loved with such a great passion and zeal. Kate, Miles and Brooks will be his legacy always- as will all that have been touched by him.

Jeremy was born June 12, 1974 in Elgin, IL with a collapsed lung and spent his initial days in intensive care- exhibiting his toughness at a tender age. He also exhibited his adventurous spirit early on in life. He climbed up on the roof of the family's Elgin, IL home at age 4 following his dad up the ladder and interrupting Dad's work with a "what ya doin' Dad?"

Aviation brought the Monnett family to Oshkosh in 1981. Jeremy's formative years led him to a passion for singing, dancing, running, and then aviation. Participation in Odyssey of the mind laid the groundwork for his engineering interests. He helped restore an Aeronca L3 Warbird Aircraft with his dad while in high school, stoking the passion for aviation that would later define his career.

He spent five glorious years on the campus of UW Madison earning his mechanical engineering degree, making many friends from far and wide and of course becoming a huge Badger fan. While in college, he interned for a summer in Detroit for General Motors- and begin to realize that working for corporate America was not in his plan.

Upon college graduation, he moved to Seattle to work for the Boeing Company. He worked remotely assisting in the early stages of Sonex, establishing the website and helping respond to early builder inquiries via email. While with Boeing, he had the opportunity to visit China, Japan and Australia- and he fondly recounted those trips over the years-- including the wishes he made in a Chinese fountain--- that he would help Sonex become successful and find and marry the woman of his dreams. While he enjoyed Seattle and made many new friends-- in 1998 he returned to Oshkosh to work at developing Sonex full-time.

Upon his return, Jeremy did help guide Sonex to prosperity. He began as general manager and grew into designing his own model - the Onex- with the helpful input of his father and Pete Buck.

He also became an incredibly active and impactful member of the community-and was a tireless champion of many causes. He began as President of the Oshkosh Jaycees, Member of the Chamber Aviation Committee, then involvement with Progress Oshkosh and the light the bridges campaign, Chairmanship of the Christine Anne Domestic Abuse Center Board, service on the Chamco and in formation of the Greater Oshkosh EDC. In these capacities, he gained many valued friendships and admirers. He was a cheerleader and an advocate for Oshkosh and his leadership in many areas will be missed. He was honored as a 40 under 40 recipient by the Oshkosh Northwestern. He was also a national advocate and participant in the home built aircraft industry: a young leader in that movement that he was so passionate about.

....And he did meet the love of his life!!!!! His love for Kate was so strong and undeniable. From the first Jaycees meeting Kate attended, Jeremy knew she was the one he was going to marry. When on their first date four years later, driving home Kate said to Jeremy: "This sucks. I'm never gonna date anyone else again." They were engaged on St Patrick's Day 2006-- less than eight months after they started dating. They were marred on March 24, 2007.

Through his organ & tissue donation, Jeremy gave the precious gift of prolonged life to as many as 50 people. Please enroll as an organ & tissue donor TODAY.

A memorial service and celebration of Jeremy's life will be held Sunday, June 7 in the Eagle Hangar of the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh. Public visitation will be from 10:00am to 2:00pm, followed by a Service and Reception. In Lieu of Flowers, the family has established a memorial.

To Dear Jeremy from Kate,

Thank you for loving me and making me feel like the most important, beautiful person on Earth. I will forever miss your constant hugs, kisses and: "I have such a hot wife" up to 10 times a day. I will do my best to raise Miles and Brooks without you. You were the best Dad! They are young, but your legacy will always be remembered. They were both doing 'the monkey' this morning but it will never be as great as yours.

Your loving wife, Kate

Sonex Family Mourns Loss of Jeremy Monnett and Mike Clark
06-03-15

It is with heavy hearts that we report the loss of two members of our Sonex family. Sonex Aircraft CEO Jeremy Monnett and Sonex assembly mechanic Mike Clark died yesterday in an accident involving Sonex Sport Acro N123SX at the East end of Wittman Regional Airport’s runway 9, which occurred on Tuesday, June 2nd at approximately 3:30pm. The cause of the accident remains unknown pending investigation by the FAA, NTSB and Sonex Aircraft.

Sonex Aircraft founder John Monnett made a statement to staff this morning that Sonex Aircraft, LLC will continue to operate despite the holes left by Jeremy and Mike’s absence. It would unquestionably be Jeremy Monnett’s wish that the Sonex company and the worldwide community of Sonex and AeroConversions customers carry-on.

Sonex Sport Acro N123SX first flew in 2007, and has most-recently been fitted with the 100 hp AeroVee Turbo. The engine had accumulated approximately 25 hours of operation in the Sonex Aircraft test cell as part of the AeroVee Turbo development program, and approximately 50 flight hours on N123SX after moving from the test cell to the Sport Acro airframe in the spring of 2014. The engine and airframe’s performance has been flawless in all respects, including recent long cross country flights to Florida for the Sebring and Sun ‘n Fun conventions, making its return trip to Oshkosh after Sun ‘n Fun 2015. Sonex Aircraft is hopeful the investigation of Tuesday’s accident will reveal conclusive findings regarding the cause, however, there are no immediate conclusions that can be drawn.

The Monnett family and leadership of Sonex Aircraft, LLC sincerely thank the dedicated Sonex staff, community of customers, the aviation community at-large, and the Oshkosh community for all of the support and condolences offered over the past 24 hours.

Sonex Builder Events: Colorado's Mile-High
Sonex Fly-In Celebrates Successful 2nd Year!
05-22-15

The 2nd Annual Mile-High Sonex Fly-was held on May 16th at Meadowlake Airport in Colorado Springs, CO. The following report is from event organizer Jeff Schultz:

"Our second annual even went extremely smoothly with a great turnout of flying Sonex aircraft, numerous active builders in the greater Colorado area, and a few interested individuals who wanted to see Sonex aircraft up close and learn more about them.

By my count (admittedly incomplete), attendance included 5 flying Sonex aircraft, 1 Sonex project (with Turbo-AeroVee), approximately a dozen various other aircraft (T-28, L-4, Vari-eze, 5 RV's, and a few other GA types) and approximately 40 people. The furthest traveled award once again went to Ron Sipple from Kansas City who made the trip via Southwest to attend, with a close second to Robert Lennon of Sante Fe, NM who drove in.

The presentations were interesting and well received, given by Gary Motley (rebuilding the AeroVee) and John Gillis ("Speed Cowl Mods"). The weather held out for us until after lunch, when clouds started building and people started heading out to beat the coming rain. Carl Benda once again brought his original VW Minibus with mobile BBQ stand and party wagon to cook lunch, and aside from a ceramic pot of baked beans that exploded on the grill, lunch was great.

I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who helped put on the event, including special thanks to Sonex pilots and builders who brought their aircraft in. I hope to see everyone back again in 2016, and look forward to meeting some new faces and future Sonex builders as well!"

The team at Sonex would like to extend a huge Thanks to Jeff, and everyone else who helped make this 2nd annual grass-roots Sonex builder event a success!

Sonex Builder Events: 5th Annual North Carolina Sonex Fly-In held in Asheboro!
05-15-15

The American Sonex Association held its 5th Annual North Carolina Sonex Fly-In on May 2nd in Asheboro, NC. The following report is from event co-organizer Pete Van Schalkwyk:

"Its hard to believe that this was our 5th "Annual" event.  The turnout was great with a record of 12 Sonex type aircraft arriving during the course of the morning. Not only were there 12 Sonex but we had about 7 other pilots fly in to the event with other makes and models of aircraft. We estimate that we had around 50 to 60 people show up, from registered folks to folks driving past and stopping in to see what was going on. This year the "prize" for the furthest flight went to:

  • Dave and Evelyn Amsler - Flew in from Buffalo NY - Stayed overnight and returned to NY the next day.
  • Paul Gerhardt - from MD, made the trip both ways in one day. Wow!!!

More photos of the event can be seen on Google Plus.

The team that organizes this event would like to personally thank each and everyone of you for making this day a success. We could not do this without your support."

The team at Sonex would like to personally thank Pete, along with fellow co-organizers Michael Crowder and "Winding" Wayne Andrews for putting-on yet another fantastic grass-roots Sonex builder event!

Sonex Builder Events: 12th Annual Northern California Sonex Fly-In held in Rio Linda!
05-15-15

Sonex builders in the Northern California area held their 12th Annual Northern California Sonex Fly-In at Rio Linda Airport on May 2nd. The following report is from event organizer Jeffry Larson:

"Bright clear skies, typical California weather in the low 80’s with a small breeze of 3-5 mph presented Rio Linda with a perfect day to celebrate aviation. In total, 7 Sonex were on the field, including a Onex, 4 Sonex and 2 Waiex aircraft.

Over 2 dozen other airplanes lined the runway including an assortment of RV’s, Lancair’s, older and newer GA’s including a trio of Ercoupe’s. All of the aircraft, plus a nice assortment of vintage cars turned the little airport into a crowd affair. More than 200 people lined up for lunch and quickly gobbled up 18 racks of ribs, packages of hot dogs and a large table of “fixin’s”. Following lunch the light cross wind added some entertainment to the flour bombing and the spot landing contests.

Can’t say enough about the people, old and young, pilots, builders and wannabe’s. If you haven’t been to an event lately, go experience one, guaranteed to meet some of the nicest people in the world. All of the Sonex guys are such quality folks."

On-behalf of the Sonex staff, we can't say enough about Jeffry, his helpers, and all other grass-roots Sonex event organizers for putting together these great gatherings!

Sonex Flying Stories - Our New YouTube
Playlist: Mike Kelley Brushes-Off the Winter
Rust with Some Spring Acro!
03-20-15

The number of Sonex customer videos posted to YouTube has exploded over the past few years. As-hard as we try, we just can't keep-up with them all -- which is a beautiful thing to see as the fleet grows! To make it easier for everyone to find Sonex customer videos, we have enhanced our YouTube channel to include a link to the YouTube-generated #SonexAircraft channel, and we have created a new playlist called "Sonex Flying Stories: Our Favorite Customer Videos." Keep sending us those video links that you're especially proud of, and we'll add our favorites to the playlist!

One such video recently came-in from Mike Kelley, builder of Tri-Gear, Jabiru 3300 powered Sonex #1284. For Mike, building an airplane and performing aerobatics in that plane had always been on his bucket list. In summer of 2014, Mike took his first and only aerobatic instruction in a Citabria. "The lesson was taught over the Juan de Fuca straight on a cool day, with a hard 3000' overcast ceiling, not allowing many visual land reference cues," writes Mike. Since then, he has been taking the basic spin, rolls and loops he learned, and putting them into simple +G combinations such as the Spit-s, Immelmann's, wing-overs, and Cuban 8's. He has no intention of ever competing, but enjoys the unencumbered feeling of these sport class maneuvers. "I'd recommend unusual attitude or aerobatics instruction to any pilot," continues Mike, "Practicing these over-and-over, including actually spinning the Sonex, has definitely made me a better & safer pilot. By far, the Sonex was the absolute best kitplane choice for me. Where else could I have this kind of fun and this level of performance on 5-6 GPH!"

Mike's Spring Acro video can be seen below and on our new YouTube custmoer videos playlist along with another recent video of his, "A Day in the Life of Sonex 1284."

Sonex Logs 59th Builder's Workshop Event!
03-12-15

Jeremy Monnett demonstrates the AeroVee powered Onex in a high-speed fly-by for the Workshop crowd on Saturday.

Workshop attendees gained hands-on metalworking experience using Sonex construction techniques with their Workshop projects.

Sonex Aircraft held it's Spring, 2015 Sonex Builder's Workshop on March 7-8, the 59th Workshop event since the company's founding in 1998!

Typical of March Workshops, the event hosted a small, but enthusiastic group of current and prospective Sonex Aircraft builders, as attendees from across the country traveled to Oshkosh to learn more about building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft. The group constructed sample Sonex metalworking projects, received detailed informational sessions about all Sonex Aircraft designs, engine options, AeroConversions products, and all other aspects of building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft.

The weather for the weekend gave Northeast Wisconsin a real break, with above-average temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50's! This afforded factory prototype aircraft fly-by's on both Saturday and Sunday, and every Workship attendee seeking a Basic Aircraft Familiarization Flight through our T-Flight Transition Training Program was able to fly -- almost the entire group! Workshop attendees also had the whole weekend to inspect every inch of Sonex factory prototype aircraft on the ground, and try them on for size.

The Sonex Aircraft Workshop continues to be an extremely valuable experience for our builders, saving them time, money and answering many frequently asked questions in the building process. Sonex Builder Workshops are held several times per year at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities in Oshkosh, WI, and significant kit discount incentives are offered for attendees. Our next Sonex Workshop will be held May 30-31, 2015. Sign-up Today!

T-Flight Basic Aircraft Familiarization Flights are a popular option for Workshop attendees. Read More about T-Flight Transition Training packages!

Jeremy welcomes the Workshop crowd, lays-out the agenda for the weekend, introduces staff, and passes the microphone around for attendees to introduce themselves.

John Monnett gives a walk-around tour of the technical design features that go-into the Sonex line of aircraft.

John Monnett gives Workshop project demonstrations before turning attendees loose on their own metalworking projects.

Workshop participants get to work on their Sonex metalworking projects!

Jeremy hops into the Waiex for some fly-by's on Sunday morning. In addition to high-speed fly-by's slow flight is also demonstrated, illustrating the impressive performance envelope of Sonex Aircraft.

Sunday is engine day as John educates the group about all things AeroVee and AeroInjector.

John's closing session of aircraft building tips is one of the most informative highlights of the weekend.

First SubSonex Kit Delivered!
New JSX-2 Pilots Minted; Bob Carlton Receives JSX-2 Low-Level Waiver; New Videos Posted!
02-16-15

The first SubSonex Ultra-Quick
Build Kit, ready to ship!

The SubSonex kit fits nicely inside the
optional Triton TC 167 trailer

Sonex Aircraft is excited to report the achievement of several major milestones in the SubSonex Personal Jet program during the month of February: The first SubSonex kit shipped from the Sonex factory; Four new SubSonex model JSX-2 pilots were minted in Moriarty, NM; and Bob Carlton received his Low-Level Statement of Aerobatic Competency (SAC) card for the SubSonex, in-preparation for the 2015 air show season!

First SubSonex Kit Delivered:
On Thursday, February 12th, the first SubSonex kit left Sonex Aircraft headquarters in Oshkosh, destined for customer Redge Greenberg of Durango, Colorado. The Ultra-Quick Build Kit was transported in the optionally available Triton TC 167 enclosed trailer by Sonex staff to Greenberg's home.

This week, two more kits will be delivered to customers in Ontario Canada and Pennsylvania, with kit deliveries to Missouri, Kentucky, and Oklahoma to follow next week. The seventh kit will be delivered to New South Wales, Australia via 20' ocean container. Orders are now being accepted for the second run of SubSonex Quick Build Kit production, to commence in August, 2015.

SubSonex JSX-2 Pilot Population Increases by 400 Percent:
During the weekend of February 1st, four new pilots became qualified to fly SubSonex JSX-2. Sonex Aircraft President John Monnett and Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett travelled to Moriarty, New Mexico to join Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) Bob O'Haver and BonusJet flight instructor Billy Hill in making their first flights in SubSonex JSX-2 and subsequent qualifying flights for SubSonex permanent Letters of Authorization (LOA).

On Saturday, all four pilots made their first flights of SubSonex JSX-2, all four with diverse flying backgrounds from highly-experienced jet pilots O'Haver and Hill, to JSX-1 qualified pilot John Monnett, to piston Sonex pilot Jeremy Monnett, who recently completed the BonusJet training program. Remarkably, all four flights looked nearly identical, which is a testament to SubSonex JSX-2's outstanding flying qualities.

Bob Carlton Prepares for 2015 Air Show Season in JSX-2:
Airshow pilot and SubSonex Chief Test Pilot Bob Carlton has been practicing a new air show routine in SubSonex JSX-2 for the 2015 season! Currently booked at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2015 and the 2015 Rocky Mountain Air Show with more show dates pending, Carlton has put-together a SubSonex show unparalleled by jet acts of the past including maneuvers such as tail slides (usually taboo in a jet), hammerheads and non-stop action with tight turns inside the typical piston aircraft air show box. Carlton has been practicing the show extensively over the past month, and obtained his Low-Level Statement of Aerobatic Competency (SAC) card for the SubSonex on February 12th in Phoenix, Arizona.

See Today's Press Release!
Much more information about all of the above events can be read in today's official press release.
