Sonex Aircraft Racks-Up Another Successful Year at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014!
08-15-14

Sonex Aircraft, LLC concluded another extremely successful show at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014, held July 28 through August 3.

The week's activities were kicked-off by the 11th Annual Sonex Aircraft Open House and Homecoming Fly-In, held on Sunday, July 27th. Sunday's events began with a press briefing to customers and members of the press announcing availability of the 100hp AeroVee Turbo. The long-awaited announcement was very positively received with much interest from prospective customers at the open house and throughout the show. See the official press release for more! A Sonex/AeroVee Turbo Video Tour showing-off the outstanding performance of the AeroVee Turbo powered aircraft can be found on our YouTube channel!

Many Sonex Aircraft owner/pilots brought their aircraft to the Sonex Aircraft Open House and Homecoming Fly-In for current and prospective builders to see. Attendees had a chance to see the Sonex facilities and get updates on the newest Sonex and AeroConversions products. After a group picture and Sonex-provided lunch, Sonex factory prototype aircraft were joined by customer aircraft to make the traditional "mass taxi arrival" across Wittman Regional Airport to AirVenture grounds. Sonex customer aircraft attendance to AirVenture reached a record high this year with 19 customer aircraft flying in throughout the week!

The Sonex Aircraft exhibit booth was stacked full of factory prototype aircraft, and was extremely busy with highly-interested attendee traffic throughout the week, and Sonex staff were on-hand to answer everyone's questions. A Sonex Sport Trainer was on display for the 10 year celebration of the LSA/Sport Pilot regulations at AirVenture this year. The celebration display included several aircraft from different manufacturers parked at show center on Celebration Way throughout the week. Sonex Aircraft is proud to have been a part of the establishment of the LSA/Sport Pilot rules! Factory tours were hosted once again during AirVenture 2014, with tours Monday through Saturday of the show. Sonex was once again able to offer transportation for tour-goers from it's booth on show grounds to factory headquarters on the East side of the field, and back. Like last year, each day's tours were very-well attended.

The annual Sonex Hangar Party was held on Monday, open to current and prospective Sonex and AeroConversions customers, vendors, members of the local aviation and business community, and the families of Sonex staff.

SubSonex Personal Jet model JSX-2 made it's debut appearance at AirVenture 2014. Two examples of the new, improved version of the aircraft were on-display, one in Sonex factory yellow livery, the other in a gray paramilitary scheme complete with shark's mouth that attached much attention! The yellow JSX-2 prototype was flown three times during the week during the airshow, including beautiful flight at twilight during the night airshow. See the video on our YouTube channel! Our thanks once again goes-out to SubSonex lead test pilot Bob Carlton and his wife Laurie for volunteering their time to fly the SubSonex and superbly represent Sonex Aircraft, LLC. The JSX-2 model of the SubSonex Personal Jet represents the product that will be delivered to SubSonex customers. Several deliveries are set to ship by year-end 2014 and new orders are being accepted.

We were pleased to host a special visit by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to the Sonex Aircraft exhibit booth during AirVenture. Gov. Walker discussed manufacturing in Wisconsin with Sonex ownership, along with Sonex Aircraft's future needs for growth as well as the new Oshkosh Aviation Business Park on Wittman Regional Airport.

Several forums and presentations were given throughout the week on topics ranging from building Sonex Aircraft airframe designs, engines, weight & balance, flying qualities & transition training, the SubSonex Personal Jet and AeroVee Turbo. John Monnett - company founder, president and SubSonex designer, was featured in announcer's stand interviews, and an interview on EAA Radio regarding the AeroVee Turbo and SubSonex Personal Jet.

Sonex once again hosted a meeting of the Aircraft Kit Industry Association (AKIA) during AirVenture. The AKIA organization elected new officers at this year's AirVenture meeting with Sonex Aircraft CEO Jeremy Monnett serving as President of the organization, former AKIA President Dick VanGrunsven of Van's Aircraft as Vice President, and John McBean of Kitfox as Secretary/Treasurer. Also during the meeting, the FAA reported to AKIA regarding it's plans to simplify the regulations pertaining to homebuilt aircraft transition training, and EAA's Charlie Becker spoke to the group regarding the organization’s future plans for accommodating homebuilts at AirVenture. See the AKIA press release!

The Sonex Builders & Pilots Foundation held its second annual meeting of the SBPF membership at AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 on the flight line adjacent to the Sonex booth. Foundation Vice President Michael Farley was elected to another term as-part of the meeting's proceedings. See SBPF's photo gallery from AirVenture!

Sonex Aircraft is extremely proud to have a Sonex Quick Build Kit with AeroVee Engine included as the Mystery Box auction item at the AirVenture 2014 Gathering of Eagles event! During the program clues about what was in the box were given but bidders still couldn’t be sure what was inside until the auction had been concluded, at which time the Sonex kit with engine were revealed. In total, the Gathering of Eagles Thursday night gala raised $2 million to support the Young Eagles program.

The Sonex Aircraft staff remains very busy since the close of AirVenture again this year with follow-up customer inquiries and incoming sales, making for another very successful AirVenture!

It was standing-room only as Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett unveiled the new AeroVee Turbo during the Sonex Open House and Homecoming Fly-In on Sunday. Learn More About the AeroVee Turbo!

Many customer-built Sonex Aircraft made it to the Sonex Open House and Homecoming Fly-In, allowing prospective builders to meet builders and look at all-sorts of Sonex Aircraft examples, including factory birds.

Sonex builders and pilots gathered with Sonex Aircraft staff for a group photo before the mass-taxi arrival pilot's briefing.

Sonex pilots strap-in and fire-up their machines for the annual tradition: a mass-taxi "arrival" of Sonex Aircraft to AirVenture!

The Sonex exhibit booth at AirVenture continues to provide an unmistakable sea of pretty yellow airplanes with plenty of informative graphics, literature and factory representatives available to answer everyone's Sonex Aircraft and AeroConversions questions.

The AeroVee Turbo powered Sonex Sport Acro and the AeroVee Turbo display engine were prominently on-display in the Sonex booth and attracted a lot of attention from current and prospective customers.

The AeroVee Turbo forum in the Homebuilder's Hangar was standing-room only, and all other Sonex Aircraft forums were also very-well attended.

The SubSonex captured the attention of many prospective customers throughout the week.

Rethinking that Icon deposit, are we? SubSonex is now available!

Special thanks to SubSonex lead test pilot Bob Carlton and his wife Laurie for helping us to show-off JSX-2 in several stunning flight displays during AirVenture!

John Monnett and Bob Carlton are interviewed by Steve Buss about the SubSonex on the AirVenture 2014 Announcer's Stand.

John Monnett also interviewed for EAA Radio again this year, talking about the SubSonex and AeroVee Turbo projects.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (left) stopped by to talk to John, Jeremy and Betty Monnett about business in the state of Wisconsin.

A Sonex Quick Build Kit with AeroVee Engine was auctioned-off at the Gathering of Eagles gala event to benefit Young Eagles!

The Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation (left) and Aircraft Kit Industry Association (right) met once again at AirVenture 2014. Congratulations to Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett for being elected AKIA President!

Sonex Aircraft announced at a press and customer briefing this morning that orders are now being accepted for the long-anticipated AeroVee Turbo, with deliveries to commence in the fourth quarter of 2014!

The AeroVee Turbo is rated as a 100 horsepower engine at sea level, and yields significant performance enhancement to the Sonex line of aircraft without breaking the bank. Price of the AeroVee Turbo is $10,995, and an AeroVee Turbo Upgrade package is being made available for installation with existing AeroVee Engines, even those already installed and flying, at a price of $3,995.

In a Sonex Aircraft, the AeroVee Turbo will yield a rate of climb up-to 1300 fpm, and a TAS at 8000' of 175 mph. Two Sensenich fixed-pitch propeller options are being offered for AeroVee Turbo installations on Sonex Aircraft. A 54" diameter x 50" pitch prop is intended for those wishing to maximize climb performance while still retaining a very-respectable 170 mph TAS cruise capability at 8,000'. A 56" diameter x 52" pitch prop will maximize top-end speeds, measured as-high as 187 mph TAS using WOT at 8,000' (38 in HG MAP) during Sonex/AeroVee Turbo flight test. Designed with simplicity in-mind, the AeroVee Turbo is intended for use with fixed pitch, or ground-adjustable propellers, keeping the package Sport Pilot Eligible by not requiring a constant-speed propeller, and with sea level cruise just under the Sport Pilot maximum speed at 135mph TAS at the Max. Continuous RPM specification for the AeroVee Turbo under 5,000’ MSL, 3200 RPM.

The AeroVee Turbo is a pull-through turbo arrangement utilizing the standard AeroVee-sized 32mm AeroInjector. As a "free-floating" system, boost is controlled only by throttle setting limited by a fixed waste gate and power still diminishes with gains in altitude, but losses are not nearly as-drastic as those with a normally-aspirated engine. This allows the cruise speed of an AeroVee Turbo in a Sonex Aircraft at-altitude to eclipse the performance of the 120hp Jabiru 3300 engine.
