E-Flight Initiative Progress Update Posted
04-02-08

The Sonex E-Flight Initiative design team has been hard-at-work on E-Flight research and development projects since the Initiative was announced at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2007. Much progress has been made on the Electric power component of the Initiave, designing, building and testing proprietary AeroConversions components for electric flight. A progress update and video of a test-run of the AeroConversions E-Flight Electric Motor has been posted to the newly-redesigned E-Flight Initiative web site: AeroConversions.com/e-flight

Announcing AeroVee 2.1
03-24-08

Sonex is pleased to announce the release of the latest evolution of the AeroConversions product line with the release of the AeroVee 2.1 Engine Kit.

The AeroVee 2.1 continues the Sonex Aircraft tradition of simple, elegant design.

Due to the increasing volume of AeroVee engine sales, we have been able to incorporate new features that enhance the already robust AeroVee design. The new AeroVee 2.1 features a purpose-built custom crankshaft that has a larger diameter and longer prop hub interface. This new design also eliminates the distributor drive gear and the racer spacer, making for an easier assembly. AeroVee 2.1 continues to use standard bearings, eliminating the need for custom bearings and allowing for easy replacement at overhaul time. All external steel conversion components are also now zinc plated for improved aesthetics and additional corrosion resistance.

AeroVee 2.1 Engine Kit:
$6,495

These enhanced features ship as standard equipment on all new AeroVee 2.1 Engine Kits, at the same price of $6,495.

Sonex Improves Jabiru Compatibility
03-21-08

Universal Jabiru Baffle Kit new oil cooler baffle.

Jabiru 2200 Cowl Blister accommodates larger Jabiru 2200 oil sump.
Sonex Aircraft, LLC is pleased to announce two new products which improve the compatibility of Jabiru engines to Sonex Aircraft installations: the SNX-B10-10 Universal Jabiru Baffle Kit; and the SNX-P16-22 Jabiru 2200 Cowl Blister.

The Universal Jabiru Baffle Kit (for use with both Jabiru 2200 and 3300 engines) accommodates a change in the exhaust supplied with Jabiru 3300 engines that has caused interference with our previous oil cooler installation. The Universal Jabiru Baffle Kit now includes a laser-cut oil cooler baffle and detailed instructions for the installation of a more compact AeroClassics 8000075 oil cooler. Any Sonex customers experiencing interference of new Jabiru 3300 exhausts with previous iterations of Sonex/Jabiru Baffle Kit oil cooler installations may contact tech@sonexaircraft.com to inquire about a free oil cooler baffle upgrade package. The Universal Jabiru Baffle Kit is included with all Jabiru engine purchases from Sonex, and it may be purchased by those who have not purchased their Jabiru from Sonex Aircraft, LLC for $250.

A new fiberglass Jabiru 2200 Cowl Blister, with detailed installation instructions, is available from Sonex Aircraft, LLC for $75. The Cowl Blister add-on enlarges the underside of the Sonex Aircraft cowling to accommodate the larger Jabiru 2200 oil sump on all Jabiru 2200 engines shipped since early 2007.

SNX-B10-10 Universal
Jabiru Baffle Kit: $250

SNX-P16-22 Jabiru 2200

A Reminder about Sun 'n Fun 2008
03-19-08

As spring draws near, we continue to receive a few "see you at Sun 'n Fun" notes from our builders and prospective customers, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Sonex Aircraft, LLC will not be exhibiting at the 2008 Sun 'n Fun Fly-In in Lakeland, Florida.

The Sonex exhibit team observed a drastic drop-off in Sun 'n Fun attendance in 2006, following several years of more gradual decrease in qualified homebuilt consumer attendance. We feel the show is no longer providing an adequate return on the significant investment in time and resources required to maintain a presence as an exhibitor.

The Sonex Aircraft, LLC team is instead focusing all of our efforts on preparations for our own upcoming events including the May 3-4 Sonex Builder Workshop, June 14th Sonex Homecoming Fly-In, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, along with E-Flight and other Research and Development Programs. For a complete listing of upcoming events, please see our Sonex Events Page.

John and Betty Monnett Complete Productive Tour of New Zealand and Australia
03-13-08

Sonex Aircraft, LLC Founder, President and designer John Monnett and his wife and Sonex CFO, Betty Monnett returned last week from a 17 day tour of New Zealand and Australia. John Monnett was an invited speaker at the awards dinner for the SportAvex New Zealand Annual Fly-In and Air Show in Tuaranga, New Zealand, and he presented a Sonex Aircraft and AeroConversions forum during the show as well. The Monnetts wrapped-up their tour with a visit to the Jabiru and Microair factories in Bundaberg, Australia, and they met many Sonex Aircraft builders along the way. John and Betty would like to thank the event organizers and Sonex builders at SportAvex, the builders in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, and owners of Jabiru and Microair in Bundaberg for their gracious hospitality.

New Zealand Sonex builder Alan Coubray won Best Class 2 Two Seat Microlight Aircraft with his AeroVee powered Sonex S/N 689 at SportAvex.

Sonex builders gathered with the Monnetts for a luncheon in Sydney, Australia. Back row, from left to right: Doug McLean, Peter Eedy, Adrian Clout, David Buck, Jim Lewis, Jamie Honan, Mike Strudwick; Front row, left to right: John Monnett, Lynn Jarvis, Stuart Trist, and Simon Bull.

For those of you nearing the end of a down-under summer who didn't believe John and Betty's stories of record snows here in Oshkosh, WI, the Monnetts wanted to pass-along this recent picture of the Sonex warehouse. This was taken after a few days of 40 degree temperatures and considerable melting, but you can see we still have plow piles that rival the roof eves and snow drifts partially covering the windows!
