FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sonex Co-Owner Takes Leadership Role for Women in Business

April 3, 2006, Oshkosh, WI

Sonex Aircraft, LLC co-owner Betty Monnett recently gave a speech at an EAA “Dawn Patrol” breakfast gathering for local figures in aviation and business at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, WI. Monnett was invited to speak at the Dawn Patrol because of her continuing efforts to support the role of women in business, as well as in aviation.

Most recently, Monnett is a founding member of the Oshkosh chapter of Women in Aviation International. WAI is an international membership organization with 45 chapters and over 15,000 members worldwide that is dedicated to encouraging young people to consider aviation careers as well as providing networking opportunities for women and men through the aviation industry. The Oshkosh Chapter of Women in Aviation has been in operation since November 2005, and boasts a growing membership roster of 25 aviation professionals. Monnett currently serves on the chapter’s Board of Directors in the role of Outreach Chair, and volunteers Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities for WAI meetings and programs. “In all of my past community involvement efforts, Women in Aviation is my first activity specifically geared towards aviation, so I’m very excited to be involved,” explains Monnett. “It’s really great to see so many jobs represented in Women in Aviation. When WAI was originally founded, most of the members were pilots and A&P mechanics. Now there is such diversity in the aviation careers represented by the membership, even owners of kit aircraft companies are represented!”

Monnett has also been involved in the Oshkosh chapter of Women in Management since 1986 and has served for the WIM Board of Directors in almost every capacity. She is currently involved with organizing and facilitating the Women in Management Mentor Circle. The Mentor Circle is an opportunity for members to get together, share their experiences and offer one another peer support and mentoring.

Betty Monnett co-owns Sonex Aircraft, LLC along with her husband, John Monnett, and son, Jeremy Monnett. Monnett started her career as a kindergarten teacher, and has extensive experience in the local business community prior to founding Sonex Aircraft. Monnett filled high profile roles both as Public Relations Director for Supportive HomeCare, and as Director of Education and Public Relations for Fletcher Financial Network. “I’m very happy to once again be involved in a family business, working with my family and watching the business grow and succeed,” remarks Monnett. “Mostly, I like the people… seeing our customers at shows and workshops year after year. What’s in it for me in this family venture is the truly great people you meet in aviation.”

Betty is not the only Monnett family member who is active in the community. Jeremy Monnett plays an active role in local community development organizations such as Progress Oshkosh, and is an outspoken advocate for Wittman Regional Airport. Sonex designer and founder John Monnett has been an active contributor to the local and aviation communities for many years. John is a 2001 inductee into the EAA Homebuilder’s Hall of Fame and was awarded the Oshkosh Key to the City Award in 2005, an honor traditionally given during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and reserved for other notables in aviation including Chuck Yeager and EAA founder Paul Poberezny.
