New from Sonex Aircraft: Sonex Sport Acro!
04-18-07

Sonex Aircraft, LLC is pleased to announce a new aircraft: the Sonex “Sport Acro.” Much like the Sonex Sport Trainer, the Sport Acro is a hybrid of features and option selections for the existing Sonex design, making it suitable for enhanced aerobatic performance, and offering an affordable entry-level aircraft for Primary and Sportsman class aerobatic competition.

The primary feature of the Sonex Sport Acro consists of new, increased-span ailerons. These larger ailerons are expected to increase the crisp Sonex roll rate to a competition-worthy level. Aside from enlarged ailerons, the Sport Acro is a Standard Gear Sonex with a single Center Stick, which is the basic Sonex Complete Airframe Kit configuration.

Sonex Aircraft already are exceptional aerobatic machines. With full aerobatic category G-loading and with an above-average load factor margin built-in, Sonex Aircraft represent some of the most structurally-sound aircraft available in the kit aircraft market today.

Once flight-testing of the Sonex Sport Acro is complete, and the aircraft has been put through its paces using the International Aerobatic Club (IAC) known Primary and Sportsman class aerobatic routines, Sonex Aircraft, LLC intends to offer a retrofit kit for any existing Sonex or Waiex, and optional Sport Acro equipment for new Sonex Aircraft Complete Airframe Kits. At this time, customer inquiries and orders are not being accepted. We will have full details, pricing and availability posted to this web site only after Sonex Aircraft, LLC engineers and test pilots have completed the flight test process.

Sonex Sport Acro will feature longer-span ailerons for enhanced roll rate (top). The Sport Acro cockpit has a single center stick (above, left) and the seatbelts are configured to allow the pilot to sit on the centerline of the aircraft, using the two outboard rudder pedals, creating a very roomy single-place cockpit and keeping the pilot seated directly on the roll axis. Instrumentation and upholstery are kept to a bare minimum to keep the aircraft light.

A Final Reminder about Sun 'n Fun 2007
04-13-07

Sun 'n Fun begins next week, and we continue to receive a few "see you at Sun 'n Fun" notes from our builders and prospective customers, so we would like to take one last opportunity to reiterate that Sonex Aircraft, LLC will not be exhibiting at the 2007 Sun 'n Fun Fly-In in Lakeland, Florida.

The Sonex exhibit team observed a drastic drop-off in Sun 'n Fun attendance in 2006, following several years of more gradual decrease in qualified homebuilt consumer attendance. We feel the show is no longer providing an adequate return on the significant investment in time and resources required to maintain a presence as an exhibitor.

There will undoubtedly be some Sonex pilots at Sun 'n Fun with their aircraft, and if you are already in the Lakeland, FL area we encourage you to use the Sonex Builder Database to contact local builders and arrange to see their aircraft.

In addition to using the Sonex Builder Database to contact fellow builders, there are plenty of other opportunities to see Sonex Aircraft and meet the Sonex Aircraft, LLC staff. For a complete listing of upcoming events, please see our Sonex Events Page.

Sonex Wins Small Business Administration Award
03-19-07

Sonex Aircraft, LLC owners John, Betty and Jeremy Monnett have won Wisconsin’s SBA Small Business Honorable Mention Person of the Year Award for 2007. The winner of this award is determined by several factors that include, but are not limited to, the business’s staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales and/or unit volume, innovativeness of product or service, response to adversity, and contributions to aid community-oriented projects.

The Monnett family has worked extremely hard to stay a leader in the aviation industry. Those familiar with the industry would agree that the Monnett name stands for “simplicity, affordability, and performance.” They have found success in a very difficult and competitive industry through the innovation and dedication of themselves, their staff and manufacturing partners.

AeroConversions Products in the News:
03-07-07

AeroConversions products have been featured in two recent articles. In the April, 2007 issue of Kitplanes magazine, contributing editor Tim Kern features the AeroVee engine in his monthly Engine Beat column: "AeroVee: grandson of the VW, and a highly refined conversion." Kern reviews the history of VW conversions and the AeroVee, lists the AeroVee's advantages over the competition and explains why the engine dominates the VW conversion market. Kern also got a "scoop" on the release of AeroVee 2.0, with the April, 2007 edition of Kitplanes hitting mailboxes just days before our formal announcement.

AeroCarb customer Owen MacPherson wrote an article featured in the January-February 2007 issue of Recreational Flyer, the official magazine of the Recreational Aircraft Association Canada. The article features the AeroCarb, clarifying many of the common concerns about slide-type carburators, highlighting the unit's simple and reliable operation, and MacPherson's great satisfaction with the AeroCarb, which has over 300 hours flown over 5 years on his VW conversion. The article also features two sidebars. One is an interview with Sonex Aircraft, LLC founder and President John Monnett discussing the AeroCarb and the future of the AeroConversions product line. The other sidebar features customer Gerry Younger, and his positive experience flying the AeroCarb on his 0-200 powered aerobatic clip wing Cub, which is equipped with inverted fuel and oil systems.
