Sonex First Flight: Homer Dangler

Congratulations to Homer Dangler of Adrian, Michigan, whose Standard-Gear, Jabiru 3300 Powered Sonex (S/N 0306) flew for the first time on August 15th! "I always test flew my airplanes but now at my age I want to respect the desires of my wife of 68 years and children and not fly it alone," writes Homer. "so I have a friend test flying it for me and it runs cool and flies hands off at 145 MPH and has 7.4 hrs on it at this time. It has been flown up to 185 MPH and flies very nice. My profession is a custom builder of high art antique style flint lock rifles and I feel my work on the Sonex is equal." We agree, Homer, and Gold Wings are on the way to you!

Waiex First Flight: Len du Preez

Congratulations to Len du Preez of Kempton Park, Gauteng South Africa, whose Standard-Gear, Jabiru 3300 Powered Waiex (S/N W0208) flew for the first time on October 7th! "After 2 years, 5 months and 7 days on the 7th of October 2017, Waiex #208 flew for the first time," writes Len. "The first flight was fairly uneventful, waited the whole day for the weather to clear up after major storms and rains over the whole country. A strong cross wind, gusting up to 30 mph on the main runway did not make it any easier... Thanks for all the help from the Sonex team. Really appreciated. Now let’s go fly!" SubSonex Update: Builders Enjoying Their Jets!

Tom Larkin flying with Sonex airshow pilot Bob Carlton in New Mexico.

We've received quite a bit of correspondence over the past couple months from SubSonex builders who are enjoying the heck out of their jets!

Tom Larkin of Brighton, CO and owner of JSX0003 recently made a trip to Moriarty, NM with his SubSonex to do some flying with SubSonex test pilot and airshow pilot Bob Carlton, and managed to get an air-to-air photo shoot by Mark Mocho: the first two-ship formation SubSonex photo mission ever!

Andrew San Marco of Fairfield, CT and owner of JSX0007 had his very meticulously built SubSonex painted to match his Valmet/Aermacchi RediGO turboprop. Professional photographer Andy Zink had a great time making some great pictures with Andrew and the SubSonex.

John Corneal of Petersburg, PA and owner of JSX0006 wins the award for having the most fun in his SubSonex, having brought it to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 as the first customer-built SubSonex to appear at the show. As we reported in August, John took home a Kit Champion Bronze Lindy Award for his SubSonex and did an air-to-air photo shoot with the EAA team, along with several interviews. Look for a feature story about John Corneal's SubSonex to appear in the February, 2018 issue of EAA Sport Aviation Magazine. John was also featured at the beginning of a new EAA video spot released just this week (see below). "Holy Grail- a vessel with miraculous powers that provide happiness, eternal youth or sustenance in infinite abundance. Yes, that's what I'm talking about!" writes John.

Sonex Builder Events: 9th Annual Northeast Sonex Fly-In Another Great Event!

"With picturesque views and comfortable weather the 9th Annual Northeast Sonex Fly-In took place on Saturday, September 9 at the Keene, NH airport (EEN)," reports event organizer Mike Smith. "The weather and clouds cooperated all day, and 6 Sonexes and a variety of other experimentals, Cessnas, Pipers and a Pitts flew in for the event. With those who also drove into the event, there were approximately 40 attendees throughout the day. Some demo flights were made later in the day."

"Tom Ritter gave a talk about aircraft electrical wiring and provided a list of suggested tools, and some suggestions for best practices. Stuart Leibovitz brought his in-progress instrument panel do display. I have to say I don't think I've ever seen so much stuff in a Sonex panel! Other discussions took place on the flight line about travel tool kits, annual inspections, and AeroVee installations."

"The Flight Deck restaurant (on the field) provided lunch, and the local EAA 1314 chapter provided the drinks. A big thanks to Wicks Aircraft and Sonex Aircraft who both provided door prizes! Thanks to everyone that helped, and everyone that attended! It was great to see you all!"

Sonex Aircraft would like to thank Mike Smith along with all other event organizers, attendees and sponsors for making another grass roots Sonex builder event such a success!
