Sonex Builder Events: 8th Annual Northeast Sonex Fly-In Has Successful Rain Date Event!

Event co-organizer Mike Smith provides this report:

Blue skies and high 70s marked the 8th Annual Northeast Sonex Fly-In at the Keene, NH airport, on September 17. For the first time in 8 years the original date and rain date both had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Because of the change in dates the turnout was understandably light, yet there were several Sonexes and a few other experimental aircraft on hand beginning at 10am.
About 20 attendees got the chance to spend a good deal of time on the ramp looking over the aircraft and asking questions. The FBO, Monadnock Aviation, and the local EAA 1314 chapter supplied the burgers, dogs and fixin's for lunch. There was plenty of food available and everyone left the table stuffed and happy.
At 1:30 Stu Leibovitz showed us his electric trim actuator setup (for elevator and aileron) with a 4-way switch on the top of the control stick. The controller board was $20 from ebay! Mike Smith (Sonex N439M) gave two presentations, the first on cutting braided hose and installing AN fittings, and the second on labeling electrical wiring.
A lot of information was passed along during the day, and the event broke up around 3:00 with the skies still clear and the air still warm!

Sonex Aircraft would like to extend a hearty thanks to Mike Smith and all other event organizers and attendees for making another grass-roots Sonex builder event a great success!

Sonex First Flight: Pieter Van-Schalkwyk

Congratulations to Pieter Van-Schalkwyk (better known as Pete Smith) of Raleigh, North Carolina, whose AeroVee powered, standard gear Sonex (S/N 773) flew for the first time on September 14th! "This was the second plane I built with the first one being a Waiex SN# 38 which I flew for 414 hours in about 5 years," writes Pete. "The project was worth every minute and as for the joy and thrill of the first flight, absolutely amazing. I flew for 34 minutes in the pattern and then landed. To those of you out there still building and looking for motivation to complete your projects, trust me when I say, get on with it, it is worth every minute of the build when you make that first flight. Make it happen folks, make it happen. To John Monnett and his great staff - not much I can add to what they have accomplished. Thank you Sonex. To my wife, I see the honey do list on the refrigerator door has grown substantially over the last 4.5 years, if you stop buying me Sonex kits to build I promise I will get to your list. Seriously, thanks for all your help and support." That's okay, Mrs. Van-Schalkwyk, you can keep buying him Sonex kits! Gold Wings are on the way!

B-Model Test Flight Video Now Available!

Sonex Aircraft has just released the first flying video of our new B-Model series of aircraft! Ride along with Joe Norris of Sonex Aircraft during the B-Model flight test process in Red One, our Waiex-B prototype. Red One is AeroVee Turbo powered and the flight test process has revealed no surprises -- it flies exactly like a Sonex and meets all published B-Model specs! Speed with the AeroVee Turbo and the cleaned-up B-Model cowling is impressive, with top speeds over 190mph TAS at 8,500 feet. Without trying too hard the airplane cruises at 150 mph TAS at about 3500-4000 ft. Climb rates have averaged 1100-1200 fpm as more of a "performance climb," and about 800 fpm in "cruise climb."
